Typography handoff

How to collect fonts for project handoff.

Fonts are part of a project's visual system, but they are also licensed software. A reliable handoff identifies every font, checks its license, and records where the recipient can obtain it.

01

Create a font inventory

List family, style, foundry, and source for every typeface used in After Effects, Premiere Pro, MOGRTs, Illustrator files, and Photoshop documents. Include weights that appear only in alternate comps or hidden layers.

02

Check license rights

Do not assume a desktop font can be redistributed. Some licenses allow internal team use but not transfer to a client. Adobe Fonts are usually activated through the recipient's own Adobe account rather than copied into a delivery folder.

03

Use a 00_Fonts documentation folder

Keep a 00_Fonts folder at the top of the production package. Store permitted font files there, and add a text or PDF inventory with links for fonts that cannot be redistributed.

04

Test on a clean system

If possible, open the delivery on a machine or user profile without your local font collection. Missing-font warnings reveal dependencies that are easy to miss on the original workstation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I copy every font into a client delivery?

No. Font redistribution depends on the license. Provide an inventory and acquisition link when transfer is not permitted.

How should I handle Adobe Fonts?

List the Adobe Fonts family and style so the recipient can activate it through their own Adobe account.

Why use a 00_Fonts folder?

The 00 prefix keeps typography dependencies visible at the top of the package and separates them from footage and project files.
